GLOSSARY OF TERMS
NIRMG Logo The NIRMG  scheme began in 1985 and is concerned with monitoring environmental radioactivity particularly because of the relative proximity to the Sellafield reprocessing plant in Cumbria.   Environmental samples collected by the participating local authorities (marine and terrestrial samples) are sent to the Geosciences Advisory Unit (www.gau.org.uk and www.sermg.org.uk) laboratories based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.   Here a range of radionuclides are determined (Tc-99, Pu and Am and a range of gamma emitters) and compiled into a Annual report.
